I co-led and with my wife Jill alongside, joined the Sunbird trip ‘Cape to the Kalahari’led by Steve Rooke. The birding was great with highlights including Shy Albatross, Northern Giant Petrel and Sub-Antarctic Skua seen on the pelagic. Black Harrier, Orange-breasted and Malachite Sunbirds on the Cape, Spotted Eagle Owl and Black Sparrowhawk at Kirstenbosch, whilst our search for larks produced 14 species including the sought-after Red Lark. The trip finished in the Kalahari Desert with a pride of 6 Lions, Gemsbok, Meerkat and Black-backed Jackal competing for our attention with Lilac-breasted Roller, Verreaux’s Eagle Owl and Crimson-breasted Gonolek!
