For the past 5 years I have used Canon and have owned or used most of the L series telephoto lenses, also cameras ranging from the EOS 10D through to my current camera the 18MP EOS 7D. However my equipment is constantly changing as advances in technology for both EOS cameras and EF lenses result in increased performance and resolution.
My preferred 'walkaround' set up for bird photography is the EOS 7D with the superb EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM + EFII 1.4x extender. This set up gives an effective focal length of 672mm with a maximum aperture of f/4 and allows the user freedom and does not rely on a tripod. Useful in rainforests or at migration hotspots where time is of the essence and light is at a premium.
The best tripod mounted set-up is without doubt the EF 500mm F/4 L IS USM mounted on a Gitzo 1325 with a Wimberley Gimbal head. Like the above, it is excellent when used with the EFII 1.4x extender giving an effective focal length of 1120mm with a maximum aperture of f/5.6, but I can tell you from personal experience that your shoulder will ache after a day in the field with it!
